The Seahawk, identified by its insignia as 505, is an American submarine which first appears in the 1962 Toho film King Kong vs. Godzilla.

King Kong vs. Godzilla[]

The Seahawk appears in the opening scene of the film, carrying a decorated naval captain and several sailors. As the ship travels through the seas north of Japan, they find that the temperature of the water outside is warmer than it should be. A lookout in the sub's Conning Tower notices that a massive iceberg nearby is glowing strangely, and the captain orders his crew to go and investigate. As they travel towards the Iceberg, part of it begins to collapse, so the crew make Seahawk dive, so that they can continue to investigate. As they dive, they collide with the iceberg, disabling the sub's engines. The captain orders the sailors to make repairs, but the engine room suffers a fire. Then, he orders them to try and escape, but the Conning Tower floods, and the hatch breaks, beginning to flood the control room. As the humans begin to panic, the Captain presses a button, releasing yellow dye into the water, just before the submarine is destroyed by more falling ice, with its interior bursting into flames.

Later, a group of reporters in a Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw fly close to the Seahawk's last sighted location on RADAR, and find the yellow dye in the water, but the Seahawk is nowhere to be seen. However, as they fly towards the iceberg, it breaks open, revealing Godzilla inside.

Trivia[]

  • Though the Seahawk itself is fictional, there was an American patrol boat of the same name during World War I.
