Godzilland (ゴジランド,   Gojirando?), is a children's television series created by Toho Company Ltd. based on the Godzilla franchise. It features characters of the Godzilla series in chibi-style animation. Two seasons were produced, the Adventure! Godzilland (冒険!ゴジランド,   Bōken! Gojirando?) and Adventure! Godzilland 2 (冒険!ゴジランド2,   Bōken! Gojirando Tsū?) to promote the 1992 and 1993 Godzilla films, Godzilla vs. Mothra and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, respectively. The seasons were followed by a series of four educational OVAs titled Recommend! Godzilland (すすめ!ゴジランド,   Susume! Gojirando?) released to VHS in 1994 and 1996 by Gakken.

Summary[]

Adventure! Godzilland was created to promote the upcoming film Godzilla vs. Mothra. It aired weekly from October 1 to December 24, 1992 on TV Tokyo. The show was designed as a trivia show, featuring clips from the film as well as cast members, including the actresses who portrayed the Cosmos. The show introduced a song about doing gymnastics called "Godzilla So-Fa-Mi-Re-Do" that played during several episodes and was even released on various albums. Each episode lasted about 15 minutes.

In 1993, Toho produced a similar show called Adventure! Godzilland 2 to promote Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. This show aired weekly from October 7 to December 30, and followed a similar format to the previous show. This show was sponsored by Bandai and featured numerous advertisements for their figures for the film. Godzilla, Mechagodzilla, and Baby Godzilla made live-action appearances on the show, along with several cast members. This series also notably introduced animated segments, featuring chibi kaiju based heavily on their designs from the 1984 Godzilland merchandise line.

Recommend! Godzilland is loosely based on the animated segments from Adventure! Godzilland, and focuses on a young Godzilla and his friends living together on Monster Island as they learn about various subjects. The first two OVAs were released in 1994, and focused on the hiragana alphabet and counting. The next two were released in 1996 and focused on addition and subtraction. The second two OVAs are notable for introducing more monsters as well as featuring live-action segments with Godzilla (represented using the RadoGoji suit) and his human sister, where he tells her about his childhood, shown through the animated segments.

In the show, Godzilla and the other monsters are portrayed as young children that live together as friends. They live on the island with Mothra, the only adult in the show, who acts a maternal figure to the other monsters while raising her two twin larvae. Godzilla frequently gets into arguments with his best friend Anguirus, which often drive the plot of the episodes. MechaGodzilla is not part of Godzilla's group of friends, and is portrayed as being very lonely and desperate to make friends. Because of this, MechaGodzilla tries to kidnap Godzilla's friends and force them to be his new friends, forcing Godzilla and the others to save them. Despite being seen as an antagonist, the mecha's lonely nature means that he often ends up being taken in by the others as a friend once those he captures are rescued.
