Naoko is a journalist for Toyo Broadcasting, who at the time that the film takes place is gathering articles for an upcoming television program called Modern Day Mysteries.

Throughout the film she covers stories about the many goings-on in the area, from a meteorite in Mount Ado, to an alleged Martian prophetess. She is first seen on screen editing film in an office building, when she is sent to investigate an alleged Martian who claimed that, should any boats leave the harbor, then something terrible would happen to them. After the girl is asked to leave the ship for upsetting the passengers, Naoko then takes the girl to a hotel for an interview. The Martian is nearly kidnapped, and is then brought in for psychoanalysis, for which Naoko is present. She later helps to present the use of Mothra to defend Japan against Ghidorah. It is Naoko who realizes that Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra are conversing with each other and seeks someone who can translate. She helps to rescue her brother by recognizing his raincoat dangling from a branch in a gorge. At the close of the film, she interviews Selena Sano.
