Moguera (モゲラ?, Mogera) is a Mysterian mecha created by Toho Studios that first appeared in the 1957 film, The Mysterians. It first appeared alongside Godzilla in the 1997 Godzilla television series, Godzilla Island.
Moguera's name is derived from "mogura" meaning "mole", since it is a robot that is not only used for combat, but for digging purposes as well.
The war machine Moguera was created by the Mysterians, a group of aliens from Mysteroid who embarked down to Earth looking for a place to live and reproduce following the destruction of their own world. Moguera first appeared near Mt. Fuji, devastating a town and a local shrine. The war machine then moved further up stream, sending currents of dead fish in its wake due to the tremendous heat and radiation the machine was emitting. Moguera was once again seen after a landslide in which the robot attacked a group of nearby policemen.
By night fall, the towering brute had made its way to the power plant, destroying it, before making its way into the heart of the town. Moguera destroyed the little opposition the town presented it, as the Self Defense Force deployed a battalion of soldiers equipped with machine guns and flame-throwers along with missile launcher trucks, all of which had no affect. Moguera was finally defeated, when a bridge the robot was crossing detonated and collapsed, sending the war machine plummeting down to it's demise.
The Mysterians deployed another Moguera later on, when the tides of the final battle were turning against them. The second Moguera dug its way underground, and emerged in the heat of battle. However, fate was not on its side. The war machine dug too close to a Marklite Cannon, causing it to tower over, crushing the short lived second Moguera.Godzilla Island, and was known as "Proto-Moguera". In the "Proto-Moguera Saga", the machine is taken over by the series' villaines and used to fight Godzilla in a bizarre Whack-A-Mole-type conflict.
- Moguera can fire beams from its eyes
- Moguera emits a high temperature
- Moguera has the ability to burrow
Godzilla: Monster of Monsters Bio
Appearing on the first world, the giant mech Moguera will follow Godzilla and Mothra through out the game, attacking them on each world. Moguera lacks versatility as he is only able to walk across the stage rather slowly, usually in response to the player's movement; in fact, if the player advances on Moguera there is a chance he will back himself into the corner. Moguera can jump, not very well however, but it will still be enough to knock Mothra to the ground if she is too close. While Moguera lacks the maneuverability of Gezora, he makes up for it with fire power as his Eye Beam will deal noticeable damage to either Godzilla or Mothra; furthermore, the beam is incredibly accurate and its very rare that either Godzilla or Mothra will be able to dodge it. Moguera has two variations on his Eye Beam, one a bright red and the other a brown; which he uses depends on who he is fighting against, bright red against Godzilla and brown against Mothra. The difference in the beams, however, is purely cosmetic.
- Moguera was the first mecha in the Toho universe.
- In the ending credits of Godzilla: Final Wars, a boy is seen playing with Godzilla plastic-designed figures; one certain figure among the toys was Moguera from the Showa series.
- Moguera appeared in one of the Toho website non-commercial cartoons, Retro Moguera, directed by Miles Rilehoff.
- In Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla, a robot is built from the remains of MechaGodzilla by the G-Force to stop Godzilla. Nicknamed M.O.G.U.E.R.A., it had many of the characteristics of the original Moguera.
