Hideo Ogata (尾形秀人,   Ogata Hideto?) is one of the main characters in the original 1954 Godzilla film, Godzilla, and its 1956 counterpart, Godzilla, King of the Monsters!.

Appearance

Ogata was very formal in appearance, having generally been seen wearing suits and professional clothing. When on board any ships, he donned a sailor's cap.

Personality

Ogata was rather stoic in personality, being straight forward, and sometimes brash in his mannerisms. This was displayed more so upon Ogata's confrontation of Serizawa, where the two broke out into a scuffle over the Oxygen Destroyer, and only after Ogata was wounded, did he begin to speak on why Serizawa should consider its use.

Relationships

Emiko Yamane

Emiko was Ogata's love interest during the events of Godzilla.

Daisuke Serizawa

Serizawa and Ogata share a stable friendship, and the two went together in their quest to activate the Oxygen Destroyer to kill Godzilla.

History

Godzilla

Ogata was a sailor in the Japanese Coast Guard who worked in salvaging ships. Ogata was called in to investigate the disappearance of the Eikou Maru. Ogata was in a relationship with Emiko Yamane, who was already engaged to her childhood friend Daisuke Serizawa. Ogata planned to ask Emiko's father, famous paleontologist Kyohei Yamane, for permission to marry Emiko after she broke off her engagement with Serizawa, but Emiko could not bring herself to do it.

Ogata accompanied a research party to Odo Island, where he witnessed Godzilla rise over a hill. Ogata believed that Godzilla needed to be destroyed, which angered Dr. Yamane, who wanted Godzilla to be preserved and studied. Following Godzilla's devastating raid on Tokyo, Emiko told Ogata of a terrible invention that Serizawa had showed her, a device called the Oxygen Destroyer, which might just be capable of destroying Godzilla. Ogata and Emiko visited Serizawa in his lab to ask him to use the device against Godzilla, but Serizawa refused. However, after witnessing a news program about the devastation, Serizawa was convinced to use the Oxygen Destroyer.

Ogata donned a diving suit to help Serizawa detonate the Oxygen Destroyer in Tokyo Bay, but was pulled to the surface just before Serizawa activated it. Serizawa then wished that Emiko and Ogata would be happy together, and severed his line, allowing himself to perish along with Godzilla.
