Godzilla vs. King Kong (ゴジラVSキングコング,   Gojira buiesu Kingu Kongu?, lit. Godzilla vs. King Kong) is an unmade 1990-1991 Godzilla film. Template:TOC

History

Following the mediocre box office performance of Godzilla vs. Biollante in 1989, Toho planned to try and make their next Godzilla film as profitable as possible. For this reason, they chose to remake their most successful film, King Kong vs. Godzilla, under the title Godzilla vs. King Kong. Details of the plot are mostly unknown, however according to an interview with designer Shinji Nishikawa, King Kong would have fallen in love with a human scientist, who would later convert him into a cyborg, an idea loosely repackaged and used in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah.[1]

Ultimately, Toho found themselves unable to acquire the rights to use King Kong in the film, and decided instead to feature Mechani-Kong as Godzilla's opponent instead. However, they learned that even using the likeness of King Kong would be difficult, especially since Toho themselves did not create Mechani-Kong, who first appeared in The King Kong Show, and the film was scrapped altogether. Still, ideas from this film and Godzilla vs. Mechani-Kong were later used in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah and Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla 2.

Trivia

  • A remake of King Kong vs. Godzilla titled Godzilla vs. Kong was eventually announced by the American studio Legendary Pictures with a tentative release date of 2020.
  • The legal issues that blocked the production of this film came at a time where companies like Universal Pictures and Turner Entertainment were fighting over the rights to King Kong and his likeness, one well-known dispute being Universal's legal battle with Nintendo over their character Donkey Kong.
