KING KONG APPEARS IN EDO Footage Found?!
December 19, 2012
About a month ago, I was visiting Japan and met a friend of my grandfather's who is an avid film collector. The man let me browse though his collection, as I stumbled upon a very small reel simply titled "King Kong". I asked him what it was, and he replied that he didn't even remember owning it. I decided to give it a quick watch, and to my shock, it was footage from the supposedly lost 1,938 Kaiju film "King Kong Appears in Edo". The reel was barely thirty seconds long, but the quality was in pretty good shape for a film that's over 70 years old, and it gives a good glimpse of the titular character, who does not resemble his American inspiration at all. I kindly asked if he could burn the reel onto a disc for me to share with the internet, and he gladly did so. He was amazed that he was carrying a small clip from a film long thought to be lost. Here is hoping the rest can be found!
