We make a brief departure from the peak era movies, to take a look at a based game.
My favourite part in the game is when Godzilla shouts "It's time to make an impact" and starts playing Genshin Impact all over the place, then after his weight triples he leaps at Destoroyah and makes a Maximum Impact all over him. That was truly an Ultraman Max reference of all time.
Realesed in 1999 for the SEGA Dreamcast, this game is meant to be a sequel to the incredibly mid Godzilla Generations, unlike it's predecessor this game is not mid at all.
This game is a rail shooter, you go through levels and shoot enemies that come at you. Very simple, but holy fuck, it's so fun. You aim Godzilla's atomic breath as you charge it up and lock on to enemies, it turns more red as you charge it up and with full charge Godzilla does an Atomic Pulse as well. It's so satisfying to demolish a chain of Helicopters or hit all of the Boss' target zones at once. Also watch out for the Mothra loading screen jumpscare. I sharted my pants when Mothra's hideous offspring looked deep into my soul.
You get some awesome bosses too, there's Biollante, King Ghidorah, Mothra, Space Godzilla and Destoroyah. And also 2 original versions of beloved mechas, M.O.G.U.E.R.A. II-nd who's goofy as hell and SMG II-nd who's awesome as hell. I'll go over the fights now as they're like the main thing.
The first boss is Biollante, she attacks you with her vines and Acid Sap, she's pretty easy and as long as you keep destroying her vines she'll be pretty helpless, but watch out for the occasional Acid Spray (or "Splay" as the game calls it lmao)
Then you fight King Ghidorah. He's a little bitch who flies around the battlefield and fires his Gravity Beams. I'm not sure exactly how, but you can destroy his heads, but you probably shouldn’t as that just leaves you with less targets to hit, I think it happens when you hit one of his heads just before it fires a gravity beam.
Then it's my favourite level of the game, the Mothra level. After being jumpscared by the Mothra Larva on the loading screen you arrive in some sort of ancient temple, from which dozens of those fucking ugly turds come crawling out towards you. You mercilessly blow them all to pieces before their mom appears. Mothra doesn't really do anything outside of being the 1st boss with a shield, which is the most annoying thing in the game, they do this move at random, but I have shit luck and the bosses just so happened to deploy it every time I unleashed a fully charged breath at them. Ugh.
After that it's SMG II-nd and god is he fucking awesome, my favourite boss tbh. It's probably my favourite version of Mechagodzilla too. He fires missiles and lasers at you, occasionally the Plasma Granade, but he also can fire grappling hooks and hurl you across the area, I never had so much fun while having my ass kicked in a video game before. SMG II-nd really feels like he’s smart, he switches between diffirent tactics during the fights, he gets up close and personal, then he tries to attack you from the sides, he then tries to go out of your range to charge the Plasma Cannon up, it really feels like he knows what he's doing, he truly feels like a worthy enemy. If you hit some of his weapons enough times, you can destroy them.
Then it's Space Godzilla's level, first you fight M.O.G.U.E.R.A. II-nd tho (shit design btw). He's basically SMG II-nd but only with missiles and the Plasma Granade, he's really fucking annoying. He's a little pussy who stays out of your range and tries to hit you with the Plasma Granade which removes like 30% of your health in a single strike, his Plasma Granade has super long reach, he can use it at a range from which you can't hit him.
Space Godzilla's level is bullshit, with crystals coming out of you from everywhere. I had to save-scum here, thank god I was playing on an emulator. After you get through Crystal hell you face Space Godzilla. Who doesn't really do much either outside of having a banger theme.
Finally the Destoroyah level has you facing off with the Super X III first, which is pretty easy. The you reach Destoroyah and he is decent final boss, but he could be better. He attack with his horn katana, micro oxygen beam and does a flying tackle attack he will also split into the small xenomorph wannabees every time you get a 1/3rd of his health down. He also can deploy an energy force field for some reason. His only real issue is that he has way too much health, the battle really drags on, it's more of an endurance test than anything. I'd say SMG II-nd was harder, except he had less health, there's moments where you can't avoid attacks and Destoroyah will eventually chip your health away if you're not extremely carefull, he'll do it before you're able chip his health away. So him having less helath could have helped this fight. The fight really gets kinda boring after those first few minutes pass. This could have also been fixed by giving him more attacks as he only has like 3. Like give him his chest beam and make him able to drag you across the arena after grabbing your neck with his tail.
Then the game ends with Godzilla jumpscaring the military.
So rating:
Story - it doesn't really exist so I won't count this into my rating.
Gameplay - 10/10 - I LOVE my rail shooters, man.
Soundtrack - 10/10 - do yourself a favour and listen to the boss themes, they're really good. The best track is probably Space Godzilla's theme.
Idk what else to say, so to end this review off I give this game a 9/10 rating, like I said above, some bosses could be improved and Space Godzilla's level is bullshit so no 10/10 from me. Go play it now.
